NMSI’s Laying the Foundation Summer Institute

National Math + Science Initiative

The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) Laying the Foundation (LTF) Summer Institute is training that provides teachers with materials and resources to prepare students with advanced coursework. UTeach alumni and upper-level students are invited to attend the Laying the Foundation Summer Institute free of charge.


NMSI Summer Series, 2022 dates to come

Session types designed to prepare teachers for the upcoming school year.

Choice, flexibility, deep content support and time to collaborate with fellow teachers.

Laying the Foundation – 14 training hours

  • Grade 6-8, and 9-12 (non-AP) math, science and English teachers

NMSI Content Workshops2022 dates to come

Content-intensive two-day learning experience. 13 training hours

  • Grade 6-8, and 9-12 (non-AP) math, science and English teachers
  • AP math, science and English Language teachers


  • How to access your UTeach Alumni Network benefit? 
    • Log in or create an account at https://portal.nms.org
    • Click "NSMI teacher" next to "Select Your Role(s)"
    • When prompted to enter your school/ schools, enter the full name of your UTeach university (e.g. University of Houston)
    • If you get an error message, contact Sara Leiken at NMSI and she’ll get you squared away. Her email is sleikin@nms.org.
  • Course Requirements? Not outside of the Summer Series or Content Workshops.
  • What is the Format? Content is offered virtual/live, delivered through Blackboard.
  • Schedule Conflicts? On demand options are available for teachers who have conflicts.
  • Next steps? Participants will be sent onboarding course information upon registering.
